There are studies that link chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome and IC to hypervigilance (defined in medicine as maintaining an abnormal awareness of environmental stimuli, heightened startle responses and flashbacks). Hypervigilance predisposes to the development of chronic pain disorders, research seems to show:
I have noticed that I am particularly hypervigilant, and wondered if other here are too.

Hypervigilant is the exact term my pain management doctor used in his write-up of my first visit.
Age: 27 | Onset Age: 26 | Symptoms: Pelvic pain (began w/ introduction into bladder/prostate of highly resistant strain of bacteria that was acquired via a Botox injection intended to treat levator ani syndrome) | Helped By: Paxil for anxiety, Trigger point release and trigger point injections, stretches, hot baths, Prosta-Q | Worsened By: Stress/anxiety, Sitting down for long periods,
Most if those traits describe me perfectly. At work I hear everything And know whats going on all around me. I'm like Jason Bourne but in the office. It's very wired I tell what I hear to my buddy and he just can't believe I can manage all those processes and still get my work done to the highest of quality.
I can't tell you how many times something has fallen and I can catch it before it hits the ground...It just happened the other night when my daughter knocked over her drink and I caught it in mid air...I thought it was because I had quick hands as a drummer you know...:)
Very hyper vigilant...My wife can attest to it!

I encourage anxiety prone UCPPS people to consider L-Theanine Age, 44 onset age 37 Feb 2006 Freq. need to urinate. Sensation of having to urinate soon after going. Perineum discomfort/burning/tightness, pubic area discomfort @ times, poor urine stream, post urine dripping/spray. All symptoms have improved with my protocol. At the worst I give it a 1 to 2 on irritation and discomfort and frequency. Helps: Elavil 5mg for anxiety and mast cell protection, (will only take it as needed) self internal PT as needed, stretching, walking, stairmaster cardio workout and light weights, reducing stress, moment to moment relaxation, deep breathing relaxation and using a Theracane. Makes worse: sitting for long periods, stress, over focusing on it. Currently 95%-98% recovered. Stay positive, relaxed and control your anxiety.
I have been in a large room and someone strikes a match a good distance away and although I am looking the others way, I sense it. Friends would laugh at it but hypersensitivity can be tough. Thing is it comes and goes. But when it is on, a baby crying or a car alarm or even a ticking clock at night is torture.
It is helpful in some lines of work though. At times it has been an asset.
Age: 25 | Onset Age: 19 | Symptoms: cloudy white urine (most frequently in the colder months of the year), pain in testicles (very infrequent and mild nowdays, used to be 24/7 and bad for like at least 1 1/2 years), pain in lower back (now virtually nonexistant, used to be 24/7), muscle spasm in perineum area (during sexual activity, extreme stress/injury, sneezing, and when changing position when lying down), dribbling after urination, weak urine stream, a feeling of not emptying completely after urination, sometimes hesitancy starting, golfball feeling in rectum at times (usually relieved/lessened by defecation), premature ejaculation, little pleasure when ejaculating too quickly from masturbating, weak erections most of the time (and even if they have some strength sometimes, usually it goes limp after a few minutes), white particulate matter in semen most of time, | Helped By: Relaxation | Worsened By: ejaculation, or any kind of sexual activity, especially prolonged arousal without touching my genitals, spicy foods, hard excercises, prolonged sitting
I am definitely. My doctor even told me that this hypervigilance contributes to my pain receptors. I’ve struggled with hyperacusis and tinnitus over the years before this new pain issue. Anyone else struggle with sensitive hearing?
