Hypervigilance survey

Post by webslave »

There are studies that link chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome and IC to hypervigilance (defined in medicine as maintaining an abnormal awareness of environmental stimuli, heightened startle responses and flashbacks). Hypervigilance predisposes to the development of chronic pain disorders, research seems to show:
  1. Gamma oscillations as a neuronal correlate of the attentional effects of pain.
  2. Limbic associated pelvic pain: a hypothesis to explain the diagnostic relationships and features of patients with chronic pelvic pain
  3. Perceived intensity and unpleasantness of cutaneous and auditory stimuli: an evaluation of the generalized hypervigilance hypothesis
  4. Prevalence, symptom impact and predictors of chronic prostatitis-like symptoms in Canadian males aged 16-19 years
...and many more.

I have noticed that I am particularly hypervigilant, and wondered if other here are too.

Most if those traits describe me perfectly. At work I hear everything And know whats going on all around me. I'm like Jason Bourne but in the office. It's very wired I tell what I hear to my buddy and he just can't believe I can manage all those processes and still get my work done to the highest of quality.

I can't tell you how many times something has fallen and I can catch it before it hits the ground...It just happened the other night when my daughter knocked over her drink and I caught it in mid air...I thought it was because I had quick hands as a drummer you know...:)

Very hyper vigilant...My wife can attest to it! :-D

Age, 44 onset age 37 Feb 2006 Freq. need to urinate. Sensation of having to urinate soon after going. Perineum discomfort/burning/tightness, pubic area discomfort @ times, poor urine stream, post urine dripping/spray. All symptoms have improved with my protocol. At the worst I give it a 1 to 2 on irritation and discomfort and frequency. Helps: Elavil 5mg for anxiety and mast cell protection, (will only take it as needed) self internal PT as needed, stretching, walking, stairmaster cardio workout and light weights, reducing stress, moment to moment relaxation, deep breathing relaxation and using a Theracane. Makes worse: sitting for long periods, stress, over focusing on it. Currently 95%-98% recovered. Stay positive, relaxed and control your anxiety.

How are your reactions when given a new complicated task that requires thinking planning and a tight deadline...

I'm curious as I go into vigilante mode... Lol

I have been in a large room and someone strikes a match a good distance away and although I am looking the others way, I sense it. Friends would laugh at it but hypersensitivity can be tough. Thing is it comes and goes. But when it is on, a baby crying or a car alarm or even a ticking clock at night is torture.

It is helpful in some lines of work though. At times it has been an asset.

I am definitely. My doctor even told me that this hypervigilance contributes to my pain receptors. I’ve struggled with hyperacusis and tinnitus over the years before this new pain issue. Anyone else struggle with sensitive hearing?
