interesting book

Post by english_cousin »

HI all

Saw this in this Sundays Observer (national UK Sunday broadsheet newspaper). Never seen a main stream book that covers CPPS. Not read it yet but anything that raises the profile of this and the battles we have to go through for treatment must be a good thing.

Nick
Age: Onset 37 Age: 38 | Symptoms: Initially testicle/penis pain, over last 9 months has changed to be mainly perineum pain. Never had any frequency or urgency issues (well not yet anyway) | Helped By: PT, stretching, hot bath | Worsened By: Exercise, ejaculation, i think sitting for long time doesnt help but this is a recent development

wow
CPP since 2005. Prior to CPP always overly fit and active. I am female. Had two natural births: singleton 1998 and twins 2000. 2002 emergency back surgery - L5S1 herniation. Then recurring UTIs. Usual antibiotic overload. Then constant debilitating burning bladder and reaction to many foods. Australian Pain Clinic 2007. Turning point was Dec 2009 Attended Wise Clinic in Santa Rosa USA.
Was helped by strict diet but now eating normally after years of restricted diet - wonderful. Helped by: stretching, relaxation, yoga, trigger point, warm baths. Worsened by: stress, sitting, abdominal or glute exercises and salicylates
Medication: Now off all pain clinic meds no more Endone or Elavil only Lyrica 50 mg as Dec 2010 just reherniated L5S1disc and had discectomy. Its taken years but I feel I am over it.

I have contended for a while now the Mind Body connection...people like John Sarno and Schrubner...very good stuff...they contend that the most important thing is to realize there is nothing physically wrong with you to think psychological...the pain is REAL...but your mind is what caused it...and retraining it will make it go away...this is the same with CPPS...

I have read all the Sarno stuff and I think it may be a proportion of some of the pain when it gets out of control but in some cases there is nerve and other involvement. It seems to be a combination of factors. I wish I could ignore it and get on with some things but sometimes when I sit for too long now it is there no matter how much I tell myself its in my mind.

Sherradin,

Its much more than that. I'm not completely sold on Sarno but on MBS (mind body syndrome)

Those deal with nerves and muscles..and tension...so there is nerve and other involvement in mind body syndromes...that book above shows a guy who solved the same issues we have with that...

Yes its so complex and inter related it all crosses over so much. Attitude alone can help a lot. I did a lot of CBT 1 hour a week for six months and it made a big difference to being able to manage the pain alone.

He became symptom free without trigger point release, resting the mind seems to be the true key, trigger point release on its own would not maintain this result !
Age:33 | Onset Age:19 | Symptoms:burning urethra, deep sore stinging around the perineum, dribbling | Helped By:when flare starts deep relaxing over a toilet to let out dribbling urine, hot bath, rubbing a heat cream on the perineum, Tens with a pad on the perineum, running, medication (solpadol) for pain. Current treatment: PT. | Worsened By:sitting, stressing over it, ejaculation, sometimes alcohol but I risk it. Been feeling a lot better last 6 months about 85% with a few flares lasting about 5 days. No longer having PT. Stretching every other night and I believe time is also a big factor for me

Thanks for the tip English cousin. I immediately ordered it and have just finished "teach us to sit still" by Tim Parks. It is a wonderfully enthralling masterpiece. Beware, it is not an easy or self help book, its literature. In the first part he described his ailments and pains and his unsuccessful experiments with diagnosis and treatment. This part is filled with things many of us have experienced but written down beautifully and funny. Then he discovers a headache in the pelvis and experiments successfully with paradoxical relaxation (all by himself by the way). He tries some shiatsu massage and then throws himself deep in to meditation. Not only does he, aside form some persistent nocturia, treat himself form chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome he also morphs into a better version of himself through deep silent introspection. The inner conflicts he describes and the lack of body awareness are something I, and probably most of us, can relate to very much. I cannot relate to the things he experiences while meditating, having not tried that myself but it sure as hell makes you interested in meditation. I would strongly recommend the book, its comforting, funny and highly stimulating but above all a very interesting read. Bravo to Tim Parks for the courage and the talent to write such a self confronting book.
34 yrs old. Now rectal pain, some suprabic discomfort an occasional urgency. Still trying to figure out what helps. Episode of frequency in 2008 but this dissapeared for a year.
